Down

It's time to get under the covers and look at the down....
It's not just a lot of fluff.

For centuries, European aristocrats have adored down for it's comfort and countless others have relied on it for warmth. Today, the popularity of down remains strong throughout Europe because it still has no natural or synthetic equal. Down insulates while being virtually as light a air, and conforms to the body for maximum insulation effect. It adjusts to your body temperature, and even in the summer it is a delight because it breaths and acts in reverse - keeping warm air out and cool air in.

It is simply wrong to judge down by the "weight" of a finished piece. What matters is the amount of insulating power you get per ounce. This is indicated by "loft", which varies with the down's ability to trap air and insulate. Down fills can vary greatly, and it all depends on how much loft they offer. To measure loft, down is compressed in a cylinder under controlled conditions. The amount of expansion after 72 hours indicates its measure of fill power. The more the resiliency, the better the down will insulate...and the better it will feel.

Where are these qualities found?
They are found in Hungarian Down. The Hungarian "Pusztas" cool weather encourages geese to produce down with maximum insulating capacity. Our careful hand gathering allows selection of only the finest down. Such high quality gathering is found in only a few places around the world, and in Hungary it is guaranteed. Our Hungarian down comes from older birds. Once the down has been gathered, it goes through a superior sterilization process. The result is down that cannot be surpassed anywhere in the world. The excellence of which is unmatched in American made or other European down products. More demand has created more down producers, and telling the difference between their products isn't always easy. But it is important. Did you know US regulations allow manufacturers to claim Hungarian fill even when the fill is not 100% Hungarian! Our Down products have MADE IN HUNGARY at the bottom of the law label, thus assuring you that our down products are filled in Hungary and the down used is only Hungarian.

Sweet Dreams or Neck Cramps?
How did you sleep last night? You spend ½ of your life running around and ½ in bed, lying on your pillow. If you think that a pillow is "just a pillow" than you have probably never used a good one. With such a large part of our lives spent on our pillow, don't you think that quality should be important? There are two basic pillow choices: natural or synthetic fill. Natural pillows consist of feather, down or a combination of both. Synthetic fill is most commonly polyester.

The best natural fill pillows consist of down and conform comfortably to your head and neck. These are long lasting and durable, and of course more expensive. After a day of running, isn't it worth spending extra money for that much needed comfort?

Obviously you will cover your pillow, but the thread count is vital to the durability of the pillow. Not only will a higher thread count keep the fill where it belongs, it will also help keep out impurities. Quality ticking prevents dust mites.

Common Questions
How do I know if I need a new pillow? If you have to ask, you probably do. If you are not getting a good nights sleep, this may be the culprit. A good pillow will support your head in natural alignment with your spine, thus providing you with a more comfortable, better nights sleep.
How long does a pillow last? With normal use and care a natural fill pillow can last up to 10 years. A synthetic pillow, on the other hand doesn't usually last more than a couple years. Depending on your habits, someone who tosses and turns all night will be harder on his pillow than a gentle sleeper.

Pillow Care
Almost all pillows are machine washable, even down. Check the tag for directions before you remove it from your pillow. The most important factor is that they are dried completely. Any dampness left in the pillow will cause mold to form. If your pillow is fluffy without clumps, it's dry.
It is advised to wash your pillows on a gentle cycle with a gentle detergent. Run it through a second time without detergent, or use your extra rinse cycle to get all the detergent out. Dry it on a low setting until completely dry (three to four hours), and throw a tennis ball in with it. It make for a noisier ride, but it helps to produce a fluffier pillow. An added treat is to spritz the tennis ball with your favorite scent.

Mattress Pads

As with all bedding products, thread count is important. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the pad is. Also look for the thickest pad. Although you will be paying for thickness, it will provide the best comfort and protection

Fitted: A fitted mattress pad covers both the top and the sides of the mattress while resembling a fitted sheet with elastic on each of the corners. It is quilted only on the top of the pad and provides a good fit.
Anchor: Covering only the top, this has an elastic band in all of the corners. Simple, and no hassle to put on your mattress.

Thickness can be summed up by: Wool Mattress pads being the thickest, then Down, next Silk filled and Cotton Mattress pads being the thinnest.

Sizing: The size, specifically depth, of your mattress is important when choosing a mattress pad.
To make your search easier, use this list to find the right size.
Twin 39 x 75 inches           Full 54 x 75 inches           Queen 60 x 80 inches
King 78 x 80 inches            California. King 72 x 84 inches

Use and Care
All Cotton mattress pads are machine washable and can be washed less frequently than your sheets, but more frequently than your comforter. Please have your Silk Mattress Pads and Merino wool Mattress pads professionally dry cleaned when necessary, but not often. The Hungarian white goose down Mattress pads can be washed.
